Het gedoogpatent van keizer Jozef II (1781) stond toe dat het protestantse geloof weer in Oberösterreich werd beleden. Het duurde echter tot 20 oktober 1844 voordat het eerste gebedshuis in Linz werd ingewijd. De Martin Luther Kerk werd tussen 1841 en 1844 gebouwd volgens de plannen van Johann Rueff in classicistische stijl. Volgens de katholieke bouwvoorschriften die toen van kracht waren, moest de protestantse kerk 50 meter van de weg af worden gebouwd om het straatbeeld niet te domineren. Vandaag de dag valt het beter op door de afstand tot de weg.
